Faceted Search

What is Faceted Search?

Faceted search is a method of refining a search query by including or excluding categories related to the items in the search results. You see faceted search frequently in product search interfaces, where the user has the ability to narrow search results by category, price, shoe size (if you’re shopping shoes), screen size (if you’re shopping laptops) — by any ‘facets’ that are important to the collection of items you’re looking for.

Facets are frequently used in lexical search to narrow sets of results, but are a user interface pattern that can be implemented in any kind of search you build.
